Some friends and I drove back to Toronto last night after a weekend in Kingston in a rental Dodge Charger. The handy auxiliary jack allowed for an optimal musical experience, and emphasized how important it is for the music to match the occasion; that is, highway driving at night / driving through a city at night.
First up was this month’s podcast from the highly eclectic magazine, The Fader: a survey of contemporary music coming out of Africa – spanning cultures, languages, and genres. Definitely worth repeated listens – and don’t worry, this isn’t World Music of the Week type of fare.
I finally got to hear Daft Punk’s Alive 2007 – the French duo remixing and mashing their tracks live. Everyone loves to sample or remix Daft Punk tracks – and apparently so do they!
We finished off with music ideal for driving through / flying over cities at night – M83′s Before The Dawn Heals Us & Telefon Tel Aviv’s Map of What is Effortless. Highly recommended albums, and especially in those contexts.
I guess I miss having a car for these purposes.
