CBC-R2′s The Signal had a contest in September in which participants described an album that changed your life. This was my entry:

I was about nine or ten years old when I first remember hearing the album that changed my life. Like many boys of that age, I was fascinated with science fiction stories. One night, my dad improvised and told me a bedtime sci-fi story, playing the Alan Parsons Project’s album “I Robot” as a soundtrack. It’s likely that the story itself was derivative of half a dozen sci-fi films, but to a ten-year-old that didn’t matter at all; imagery of space travel and alien landscapes accompanied by the futuristic electronic arpeggiated sounds of the title track, the spooky ambience of “Total Eclipse”, and the epic orchestral climax of “Genesis ch.1 v.32″ left a lasting impact on me. Up until this day, music and storytelling have always been deeply intertwined for me, and I have come to the realization that my “I Robot” experience can explain why I have come to love things like Vangelis’ score to “Blade Runner”, Brian Eno’s soundtrack for the Apollo moon landings, the jazz-heavy Cowboy Bebop anime series, and the type of music played every night on the Signal. And of course, any time I’m deep into a good imaginative novel, you can be sure that I have its soundtrack in mind.
